Hersh Cambridge University Press, 2008 (foreword by Charles Simonyi) Book reviews.rst Abstract The concept of materials classification as a way of classifying, describing and communicating knowledge about materials has become more prominent with the move from the traditional methods of teaching materials to the electronic media, and particularly the internet. In this work we consider materials classification as a method for organising and describing the attributes of material objects and describe the history, content and methods of classification. We then discuss the current uses of classification and classification tools within the museum and heritage sectors and outline the future development of these, identifying aspects of these that might be of importance in the future, such as classification tools being used for collective, cross-disciplinary and collaborative online collaboration and the development of web-based tools. We conclude by discussing the possible effects of the recent changes in government policy relating to the documentation of cultural heritage materials, the challenges faced by heritage professionals in organising collections and the future of the museum and heritage sectors in the UK.
